The Role of Tradition in the Tackling and Management of Violence against Women

The Role of Tradition in the Tackling and Management of Violence against Women

We cannot deny the fact that various traditions and cultures existing in the world right now have led to the continuous rise in various violent acts against women. The need for a reform of certain cultural practices, such as the Female Genital Mutilation and Child Bride Marriage practices, is essential in curbing the rapid spread. Definitely in the years prior to these, the individuals there worked with their understanding and the knowledge available to them at that point. However, in a generation where proper healthcare exists and there is a vast amount of knowledge available to us, why do we have to be constricted by-laws and rules passed by people who were none the wiser. Ignorance was their savior then, but it cannot be ours when we have useful information available to us.

Policies that trump or override these cultural practices should be put in place and enforced by the appropriate authorities, the elders of such communities should be ready to have a sit-down and find better practices to replace these detrimental ones, wide mass media campaigns should be carried out to educate the masses so we can change the current narrative. We need to show people that they do not need to be guided by laws that were created by individuals who are not alive to see the cascading effects that these laws have on the present society. The saying goes that “a woman trains a nation”  thereby if the woman suffers doesn’t that mean the nation would too?
