“People choose to solve the person, not to solve the problem, caused by the person.” when you recognize a problem, you also have to recognize the cause. Once you understand the cause then you would be able to solve the root of the problem. We all know that gender-based violence is a big problem in our society. In order to educate people and tackle the problem, we have to get to the root cause of it.
Firstly, Gender-based violence can be defined as violence targeted toward a person because of their gender. The European Institute for gender inequality states that “ it is a phenomenon deeply rooted in gender inequality, and continues to be one of the most notable human rights violations within all societies.” Both men and women can fall victim but the majority that face gender-based violence are women and girls.
We can all admit that love is blind! Sometimes the red flags can be looking us dead in the eyes but we choose to ignore and that is because of the love one has for the other person. The person doesn’t notice how controlling their partner is, they make up excuses for them, and they think it’s just a one-time thing without realizing that’s their true nature. Most times when someone grows up in an abusive household, they themselves end up being abusive or getting abused. In this case, one of the root causes is the parents. Being in an abusive environment is all the child knows, therefore when they grow up they gravitate toward people who are toxic unconsciously.
Another root cause is what we watch on tv. read the magazines, and see them on social media. Most of the time the media tends to degrade women. Therefore, sometimes some men will degrade women and think it’s okay. The media has shaped how they view women, so they feel it is okay to abuse a woman whether physically or verbally because they are surrounded by things that make it seem okay.
Overall, in conclusion, we see that gender inequality in society has a big part to play in gender-based violence. We need to teach our young boys that women are delicate and need to be treated with care and respect. The media also needs to promote uplifting women and to promote that we are not sexual objects but human beings that deserve equality and respect.
